Lesson Learned, Money Earned
I don’t believe that I ever ended a game, blackjack, poker or craps, win or lose, without learning a lesson or at the least, having confirmation of a previous lesson.
Make every session a learning experience. Learn from your mistakes, don’t make the same mistake twice and increase confidence and conviction by reinforcing knowledge.
My o’l teacher used to say to me, “Sonny Boy, eliminate reoccurring problems.”
At the time, my o’l teacher was also one of my partner in a restaurant business, the Mataam Fez, in Denver, Colorado.
The restaurant extended right to the sidewalk, on Colfax Avenue, a busy commercial street. Four large plate glass windows faced Colfax and required weekly cleaning, if not more often. There was a bus stop at the corner. The bus would move in close to the curb, in front of the restaurant, as it approached the stop. On rainy or snowy days, the bus would splash the picture windows with dirty water.
My o’l teacher would bitch me out about the dirty windows. I would have to stop my kitchen prep to wash the windows, or I would have to call in someone, on staff, to do the job. I was the chef and manager in training.
On top of the windows needing constant cleaning, on several occasions, I had to replace glass, due to vandals shooting holes in the widows.
After the third shooting, I was fed up with the saga of windows and their expense. I complained to my o’l teacher. That was the first time I heard, Sonny Boy, eliminate reoccurring problems and that was all he said.
One week later, I told my o’l teacher that I had solved the window problem.
Taking seemingly little interest in my news, other than to say, “good”, my o’l teacher went about his business checking deposits and sales records.
A few days later, a masonry company rolled up to the front of the restaurant. They removed the four plate glass windows and bricked up the openings.
